The Bat and the Loon / Gary Frankfurth

The Bat and the Loon

A man kneels to a lake of tears
and cups a shattered face to his mouth.
A woman's drama is less:
she busies herself sewing a mourning dress.
Her frantic scissors clip through the night
like startled bats.
At dawn she presses
this garment between pages
of yesterday's diary.
A man pines in the manner
of the Ojibwa Loon:
his screams are the color of silver.
